MADOC FYCHAN
b.c. 1290, d.c. 1325
J in “Welsh Madoc Dynasties: Kingdom of Powys”
This
Prince Madoc succeeded his father was puppet ruler of Powys Fadog in 1304. Some say Madoc Crypl’s title went to
Gruffydd Fychan II, but most say this was his grandson, not his son. He
continued as Lord of Dinas Bran, though by this time the castle was completely
uninhabitable. But his father had
become Lord of Glyndyfrdwy, and Lord of Cynllaith Owain, and this title was
passed down to his son.
In 1400 Prince Madoc’s grandson,
Owain ap Gruffydd, AKA Owen Glendower, successfully led a nation-wide revolt
against the king of England and reclaimed the title Prince of Wales, the last
Welshman to do so. This campaign began
at Owain Glyndwr’s Mound, seen today at Corwen, Denbighshire. See http://www.castlewales.com/gldwr_mt.html
He was portrayed in Shakespeare’s Henry
IV as a wild mystic. Eventually the
king took back control. This last of
Welsh princes was last seen in 1412. His
final days are unknown. See also http://www.red-dragon-wales.com/WelshPrinces/OwainGlyndwr_1.htm
